Recognize the Real Enemy

By Amanda Haygood

Now, more than ever, society has a huge impact on our children. Everywhere we turn, the world is sending messages to our kids about their identity, future, sexuality, and life in general. They are pressured to do certain things, be in specific friend circles, dress a particular way, and engage in activities and conversations that were never intended by God.

There is a fight for our babies.

Who are we really fighting? The television producers? Social Media? Our children’s rebellion?  The friends who are "bad influences" ?

Scripture is clear: our fight is not against people.
For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against the evil spirits
in the heavenly places. -Ephesians 6:12 NLT
Our children are purposed by God. We are purposed by God. The enemy knows it. His purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy…to do anything he can to try to prevent us from walking in that purpose.

It is so easy to fight what is right in front….what we can see, hear and feel.

Our children are in front of us….they are not the enemy. Social media is not the enemy. Television is not the enemy. The radio is not the enemy. School is not the enemy. Yet, the enemy can and does use all these things to distract and destroy.

We must remember that the enemy is the father of all lies.

He is the author of confusion. He is the deceiver. The slanderer. The accuser. The manipulator.

As a parent, it is our responsibility to be rooted in the Word and in communion with Jesus, first so that we can recognize the enemy’s tactics. Then, we are to teach our children the truth of Jesus Christ so that they too can be armed and ready.

We can do more for our children by locking arms with them and leading them through life’s battles, unified against a common enemy. Praying FOR them. Praying WITH them. Remind yourself that your children are unfinished people (just like you!). They need help, guidance and direction navigating life. Do not fight them! Instead, unify with them and fight the enemy together.
I'll leave you with these three questions:
  • How can you better recognize the enemy?
  • What would happen if you kept in perspective that your children are not the enemy?
  • How would it affect your relationship with them?
